Common Symptoms of Alternator Trouble We Can Fix at Our Grandview, MO Auto Shop

Jerry’s Auto Repair • 25 February 2023

A failing alternator can cause your battery’s power reserve to become exhausted, which could then leave you stranded. To avoid such a situation, it’s best to get to the shop at the first indication of alternator failure. At Jerry’s Auto Repair, our local mechanics are highly experienced with fixing alternator and auto electric issues. Give us a call if you notice any of the following symptoms of a bad alternator.

Indications of Alternator Trouble

If your alternator isn’t working properly, then problems with your car’s electrical accessories may arise. For example, power seats might not respond promptly to your commands and power windows may take longer to roll up/down. Today’s cars are commonly equipped with computers that can determine which electrical accessories should have their power supply diminished when the alternator isn’t functioning correctly. This way, power is saved for the car’s most essential electrical needs, such as headlights. However, flickering/dimming headlights could also indicate an alternator problem.

An illuminated dashboard warning light is another common sign of alternator trouble. This light may read ALT or GEN or flash on in the shape of a little battery. It’s always important to get to the shop when a warning light turns on. Otherwise, you could end up paying for expensive repairs that could’ve been prevented.

Alternator failure can also cause a dead battery, although batteries often die for other reasons, such as parasitic draws, loose/corroded connections, old age, and forgetting to turn off headlights. If there’s no other clear-cut reason for your dead battery, then it’s worth considering your alternator as the problem.
