My check engine light is on. What’s the problem?

Jerry’s Auto Repair • 22 August 2023

An illuminated check engine light doesn’t always mean that the engine is on the verge of failure. But it’s still smart to visit the shop ASAP for computerized diagnostics so that any emerging issues can be identified and addressed before they escalate and become more expensive to repair. At Jerry’s Auto Repair, our local mechanics are experts at accurately diagnosing engine trouble. When your check engine light comes on, bring your car to our nearby auto shop so we can take care of the problem before it worsens.

Common Reasons the Check Engine Light Turns On

A bad catalytic converter is one common reason the check engine light turns on. Because your catalytic converter plays a central role in minimizing the pollution that your car creates, it’s important that it’s working properly. Signs of a catalytic converter problem include darkened exhaust smoke, decreasing fuel-efficiency, and a smell like rotten eggs. An oxygen sensor problem can trigger the check engine light and also cause trouble with the catalytic converter. Another sensor that could cause the light to come on is the mass airflow sensor. If your MAF sensor is faulty, you may notice inconsistent acceleration. There could also be MAF sensor trouble if your engine stalls shortly after you fire it up.

Bad spark plugs can also trigger the check engine light. In newer cars, you can commonly go 100,000 miles miles before replacing plugs. Failing ignition coils could also set off the check engine light.. And with a faulty battery, there may be low voltage at the computer, which could then cause the check engine light to turn on. Another issue that sometimes triggers the check engine light is a loose or missing gas cap. It’s important that your gas cap is tightly secured so that fuel doesn’t evaporate before you get the chance to use it.
